最近在CHINADAILY微翻译大赛出题，每期都收到不少译稿，有高手，也有新手，写了三期点评之后，发现有些东西是共性的，所以今天在专栏中做个总结，希望能给在译路上摸索的朋友们一些参考。
一、弄清楚翻译的目的是什么
近年来有一股风气，好多人喜欢把白话译成文言。不是说不能这样，但也要看你翻译的是什么东西。我出的第一期题目是韦伯音乐剧Love Never Dies里的一首歌词，没有想到收到的译稿中有一半是伪文言。
为什么不提倡把通俗音乐翻译成文言？
翻译不仅仅是自娱自乐，还要考虑译文的受众：翻译歌词是为了方便中国读者理解，译者应该是演员与观众之间的桥梁，而非一个炫技的表演者。倘若我们把一首西方流行歌曲翻译成诗经体，恐怕既不符合原作风格，也难以被传唱。所以如果你的译文很难懂，那只能作为再创作，未必是合格的翻译。
在接下一个翻译任务之前，我们往往要搞清楚翻译的目的和要求。译文是要发表在报刊杂志上，还是用于内部参考？原文是偏口语化的，还是书面语？译文是要放在展板上，还是用于视频字幕？不一样的用途，对于译文的要求也不同，呈现的形式可能也会有差别。如果是电影剧本，或者小说的对话，就要翻译的很生活化，句子相对短，不能跟写论文一样文绉绉。
除此之外，还要搞清楚体裁。比如英文剧本通常用一般现在时，英文小说绝大多数情况用一般过去时，我们汉译英的时候也要注意时态。如果是广告文案中译外，就要格外注意外国读者的语言习惯和文化，甚至要了解对象国的市场。
二、做翻译之前要做功课
拿到原文以后，我们应该做的不是立刻开始翻译，而是通读一遍，分析文章的风格与体裁。
对一名合格的译者来说，做功课是非常必要的，最好先了解一下文本的背景，防止想当然的情况出现。比如翻译小说散文，有必要先了解一下作者生平以及相关作品。翻译影评，得看看那部电影。翻译科技新闻，如果你都不了解文中说的产品，也容易闹出笑话。
最基本的，不能把约定俗成的人名、地名翻译错。如果把蒋介石翻译成常凯申，牛顿翻译成牛通，这就让人啼笑皆非了，也说明译者平常读英文太少，缺乏基本常识。
另外，不能把事实搞错。原文不一定是金科玉律，有时候作者的表述也不严谨（尤其是中文翻译成外语的时候），这时就需要译者火眼金睛，不被错误的事实或逻辑误导。
三、学会模仿
想做好翻译，首先要多阅读。 尤其是在中译外的时候，如果没有读过与target text类似的题材，也可以现找几个来揣摩一下。只有看过足够多地道的外文，写出来才可能模仿的比较像。
完全不看就开始凭着感觉翻，很可能翻译出来的就是四不像，或者语言不规范，因为你没有掌握与原文体裁对应的写作风格。把说明书翻译成小说散文的感觉，肯定是不对的，把论文翻译成日记的语言风格也不妥。不同的文体需要不同的语域（register），譬如口语中我们很少说thus, nevertheless这些词，在会议纪要等非正式文本中也不必出现。
四、不要拘泥于原文的句式结构
汉语是意合的语言，英语则是形合，汉语多用流水句，喜欢把逻辑暗含在表述中，讲求形散而神不散，英文写作则非常重视逻辑，句与句之间使用的连接词往往会比汉语更多，所以英汉互译不宜照搬原文的句子结构。
以这篇《爱乐之城》的影评为例：
The seasons of a love affair are played out beguilingly in this wonderfully sweet, sad, smart new movie from Damien Chazelle – the director of Whiplash – and the Venice film festival could not have wished for a bigger sugar rush to start the proceedings.
读一下这段译文，可能会有点喘不过气：
在英译汉时，为了符合汉语的表达习惯，我们可以把长句拆分，甚至打乱重组：
再举个例子，英语经常用when来连接句子，但汉语并不需要都翻译成“当”或者“在……时”。
比如这句“her huge doe eyes radiating wit and intelligence when they’re not filling with tears.”
最常见的直译是：
“不再噙满泪水的时候则……”，这是要强调女主角经常泪眼朦胧吗？显然，译者被when牵着鼻子走了。
其实还可以这么译：
当我们的思维受到英文句式制约时，可能就忘了中文还有很多连词，比如“不是……就是……”、“要么……要么……”、“时而……时而……”。

五、根据语境灵活用词
汉语和英语是相差很大的两种语言，英汉互译时跳出思维定式才能让译文更地道，译者需要做的是传达作者的意思，而非把原文字对字地转换过来。
譬如“她读书不多，却自以为并不少，偏爱被廉价的诗意打动”，这句话里廉价的诗意就不能翻译成cheap poetry，因为英语里没有这个固定搭配。不少人在词典里查到poetry有“诗意”这个汉语意思就套用上了，但这个字对字翻译是错误的，另外作者这里想说的重点应该不是“诗”，他笔下的女演员和我们身边那些附庸风雅的人一样，只是喜欢一种瞎编乱造的浪漫感觉，所以可以翻译为cheap Romance。
翻译上的进步和写作一样需要日积月累，有一个量变到质变的过程，需要我们平日里多读多写多练，多看优秀译作。如果只是盲目赶稿而不去反思，反而有可能越译越糟。最好是能得到年长译者/编辑/审校的反馈。此外，参加翻译比赛看点评也是极好的！
